Real open-ocean coverage — powered by Telenor Maritime

Our at-sea plans run on Telenor Maritime's dedicated maritime network — coverage built to reach beyond the range of land masts. On supported cruise routes you get a working data connection out on the water, your phone switches to it automatically, and your everyday SIM stays exactly where it is.

Coverage depends on your ship and route and can weaken in port, close to land, or on remote stretches. We don't promise a fixed speed — at-sea data is built for messaging, maps, email and social, not heavy streaming.

Cruise eSIM vs onboard ship WiFi

Onboard WiFi is sold per device, per day — and the move to Starlink has made it faster, not cheaper. Here's how the day-rates compare with a cruise eSIM you buy once for the whole trip.

Works alongside the major lines

A cruise eSIM is independent of the ship — so it sits happily next to whatever your line charges for WiFi. Travellers use it on sailings with:

Costa Cruises

Mediterranean mainstay. Use a cruise eSIM for everyday data and keep the onboard package only if you need it.

MSC Cruises

Big Mediterranean and Caribbean programmes. Our plan covers the at-sea stretches between ports.

Norwegian (NCL)

Starlink fleetwide — fast but premium-priced per day. A cruise eSIM is the lighter-weight alternative for staying in touch.

Built for these waters

Coverage is strongest on the routes our travellers sail most.

The Mediterranean

Spain, Italy, France, Greece and the islands — short hops between ports where staying connected matters most.

The Caribbean

Island-to-island sailings with long open-water stretches between calls — exactly where onboard WiFi gets expensive.

How it works

1

Buy before you board

Choose a cruise plan and pay online. Your eSIM and a QR code arrive by email in minutes — set it up on home WiFi before you leave.

2

It switches on at sea

Once you're out on the water on a supported route, your phone connects to the maritime network automatically. Your normal SIM stays in place for calls and texts.

3

Top up or move on

Need more data, or heading ashore? Add another plan or a country eSIM for your port stops — all from the same account.

Cruise eSIM questions

Does an eSIM really work in the middle of the ocean?

Yes, on supported routes. Our cruise plans use Telenor Maritime's maritime network, which is designed to provide coverage out on open water — well beyond the reach of normal mobile masts on land. Your phone connects to it automatically once you're at sea. Coverage and speed depend on your ship and exact route, and can dip near land, in port, or on remote stretches, so treat at-sea data as great for messaging, maps, email and social rather than continuous streaming.

Is a cruise eSIM cheaper than the ship's WiFi?

Usually, for normal use. Onboard WiFi is charged per device, per day — roughly €3.90–€9.90 a day on MSC and around $29.99–$39.99 a day on Norwegian, for example. A cruise eSIM is a single up-front plan for the whole trip with no daily charge, so for travellers who mainly want to stay in touch it tends to work out lower. Heavy streamers who want one fast connection all day may still prefer the onboard package. Always confirm the line's current WiFi price before you compare.

Will it work in port and on shore excursions?

In port and ashore your phone moves onto local mobile networks rather than the maritime one. Many of our cruise plans include data in the countries you'll visit, and if not, you can add a low-cost country eSIM for your port stops from the same account. That way you're covered both out at sea and when you step off the ship — without switching SIMs or paying roaming rates.

Which cruise lines and routes does it cover?

Because the eSIM is independent of the ship, it works alongside any line's own WiFi — travellers use it on Costa, MSC and Norwegian sailings among others. Coverage is strongest on the Mediterranean and Caribbean routes our customers sail most, including the open-water stretches between ports where onboard WiFi is priciest. It is not tied to a cruise operator, so you're never locked into a single ship's package.

How do I set it up before sailing?

Buy your plan online and you'll get an eSIM with a QR code by email within minutes. Install it on home WiFi before you travel — it takes a couple of minutes and your everyday SIM stays active. Then simply sail: the cruise data switches on automatically once you're at sea on a supported route. Setup guides for iPhone and Android are on our How it works page.
